Play Up Your Power!
March 24, 2018 – I was delighted to give opening remarks and lead two Play Up Your Power! sessions for the Berean Community and Family Life Center Annual My Sister, My Friend Women’s Empowerment Conference & Health Fair in Brooklyn, NY. My dear friend Dr. Sonia Banks, founder of Women@Play, created wonderful spaces–a zen spa room, a play room, an art room and much more! She is a psychotherapist who focuses on experiential learning through play.
For the opening, I shared The Power Living Pledge affirmation call-and-response which is always a hit particularly for women’s events. For Play Up Your Power! sessions, I blended my signature Power Living empowerment–a mix of motivation, affirmations, movement, breath–with actual old-time play. The women were doing hula hoop, playing jacks, jumping Double Dutch, playing paddle board, among other things. At the end of each session, the women had more of a sense of how to incorporate play into their everyday lives so they can be more present and have less stress.
Play allows participants to get out of the thinking mind and drop down into the heart and body very quickly and easily… and it’s fun! Sonia transformed the Berean Community Center into a wonderful escape. Thank you to Michele Ware, founder of Hoodwinked Escape in Harlem, for helping me in the room. See pictures below.
